Creating Habits

There is a reason one of the greatest self help books ever written is called “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” Grit, will power, and hard work are all good things, but they all take effort, lots of effort, and our body and mind can only give so much effort each day until we crash.  But if you think about habit, how much effort does that take? Minimal. How much effort does it take to brush your teeth, tie your shoes, ride a bike, or get dressed? Now, if you have children, think about the levels of effort they go through to try, learn, fail, and perfect these same tasks. These are all habits you have formed, and habits allow your mind and body to work for you without having to use much of your will power, creative, and cognisant brain power to accomplish.

Which Habits

What are the habits that you should form and how can you use a trigger, an non intrusive mental switch, as a powerful tool to propel your life towards its ultimate potential?

  • First thing habits.
  • Exercise habits.
  • Eating habits.
  • Drinking habits.
  • Working habits.
  • Family time habits.
  • Last thing habits.

It Starts With What You Do First Thing in the AM

Imagine this day, alarm clock goes off, snooze, alarm two goes off, snooze, alarm three, grab your phone, look at it, what’s happening on twitter, what emails do you have to respond to, get up, put on your clothes, get a coffee, and head to work.

OR

You get up, first alarm, you jump up, put on your running shoes, take a run, come back, chug  some water, take a quick shower, make your bed, jam to work!

Which way do you want to start your day?

Turning Things into Habits

Most of what we do can be turned into a habit. If we do it consistently, 62 days, and then do it for another 62 days, you will probably find that it will turn into a forever habit, as long as you don’t break it for more than 7 days.

Make good habits, break the bad ones, and your life will be forever better for it.

What do you do when you open your computer? Check email or social media, or edit your to do goals and tasks and start knocking off the big ones first?

What do you do when you go for a snack, eat chips or celery sticks? What do you do when you go shopping, buy chips or celery sticks? You see how your shopping habits can turn into your eating habits and these can turn into your health and life success.

Write It Down

Try this, write down what habits you wish to form, then write down how you wish to form them, then write that down as a SMART goal. See where I am going with this?

Like creating good habits, there is a mechanism to break the bad habits or bad days up that is just as powerful. We all know what it is like to have a bad day, can’t get anything done, can’t get a head, always behind, grumpy, not a great asset to your job, your family or the world around you. Flip side, we all have had those amazing days, also known as the day before vacation. You are on it, in the zone almost all day, and get everything done.  What if, with a snap of the finger, your bad day, could turn good? How much more could you get done, how much better could the world be around you?

Positive Triggers

It’s possible, its possible with something I like to call a positive trigger. There are things that are unique to all of us that help us shift mindset, and if we use them, and train ourselves to recognize them, they can be as powerful as such. So when I’m feeling down in the dumps, frustrated, irritable, unmotivated or negative this is what I do:

Clean and tidy up. Our house, my office, my desk, my teeth, my face, the bathroom, the kitchen, my shoes, my truck, the garage, the office clutter, the classroom. I identified a few years ago that when I straighten and clean up my surroundings, I am metaphorically straightening and cleaning up my life. Without the clutter, I no longer stutter and my day is instantly better.

Run or workout. There is a ton of science around the benefits of working out. It physically and mentally creates energy, which is driven by endorphins more powerful than morphine. It relieves stress and tension in our body, allows our mind to clear, and places us physically and mentally on the right path. It is AMAZING what a 10 minute jog or a couple sets of push-ups does for your body and mind in just a few minutes. “Running makes everyday better.” I think I quoted that a few years back on some internet site. Sooo ya, and if you ever see me doing push ups or running at random times throughout the day, don’t think I’m weird 🙂

Music. I have my favs, among which are Angels and Airwaves, Owl City, Andrew Peterson, and Cold Play. Simply plug in the Beats or turn on the tubes and watch my nerves chill and the voices internally and externally stop for minute or two.

These are simple and easy things I do to trigger a positive reaction. They are all at my fingertips almost anytime anywhere and yes they work every time! So if you see me cleaning, brushing, listening, pushing, lifting, or running randomly throughout the day, now you know why.

Other Effective Triggers 

Reading (good things of course, the news and Facebook are NOT recommended) – this brings your mind to places outside the current and allows you to come back to earth a better person.

Yoga / Stretching – releases tension, calms the mind.

Laughing – it’s the best medicine after all, be sure to laugh about good though 😉

There you have it, it’s not hard but it’s something you have to start intentionally doing, writing, and making time for.

Turning Dreams into Goals and Creating Goal Systems

Dreams are great, but without chunking them into goals, specifically SMART goals, they will not as likely be achieved. Likewise, without a system to set, tract, and improve on your goals, they will much less likely be effective in helping your dreams come true.

I set and tract four types of goals.

  • Long Term: 5 years+
  • Mid Term: 1 Year
  • Short Term: 1 Week
  • Now: Today

I set goals with the following groups of people.

  • Me
  • My Family
  • My Team

In this blog, I am going to go over the mechanisms and systems we use to set and track these goals. Before we dive into the different timespan of the goals, let’s first dive into how to make goal setting effective for all types of goals.

Write Them Down

Writing your goals out, via type or written form creates neuron connections in your brain, allowing your brain and subconscious to start working towards your goals with you. Suddenly the little constantly happening things that may have been easily brushed aside as not relevant, now get recognized by your brain and prioritized, allowing you to achieve the goal with great effectiveness. Studies show the power of writing your goals down to be upwards of 10x more effective than having a non written goal. That’s a 1000% return on a free investment. Just start writing.

Share Them

Once you write them down, you can now more easily share them with a peer, friend, spouse, boss, or a group, even publicly on a blog like Ellon did. Putting your goals out there for other people to see and read creates more connections in your brain that not only help you find things to achieve the goals but also keep your goals top of mind because the moment you see the person, or think of the people you shared the goals with, your goals will pop back into mind as well. Top of mind, top of performance. Don’t just share them however, make a pack with an accountability partner to help you stay accountable to actually achieving them.

The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that you have a 65% of completing a goal if you commit to someone. And if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed, you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%.

Make Sure They are SMART

Revisit them on a regular cadence, track performance, and modify

  • Smart goals are noted as.
  • Specific – target a specific area for improvement.
  • Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.
  • Assignable – specify who will do it.
  • Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.
  • Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

The key two items in here are measurable and time related. Once you have these two functions in a goal, you can now go back and measure your progress on a regular cadence. You can do this with an accountability partner or by yourself, both are very effective. Lets now jump into the goal time horizons

Long Term: Visioning and Business Planning

With my team and with my family, we set our horizon goals through visioning and the business planning process. These typically have a timeframe of 5-10 years. Personally I have found it helpful to employ what Ellon Musk has documented call his Master Plan. Originally published on the Tesla blog in 2006, Ellon through a blog post documented Tesla’s Master Plan over the next 10 years. He then, in 2016 wrote a Master Plan Update blog that showed how they had done against the first master plan (pretty damn close actually!) and where they were going next. I simply loved how he just wrote it out in conversational form where he saw the vision going, and so I started doing that annually myself. I am into the 2nd year of doing it, basically just updating my master plan, it changes slightly but its cool to see it stay core to its original intent while the overall tactics take slightly different turns in the journey.

Sharing it? I share this with my team, typically annually.
Making it SMART? By keeping this in a live and editable doc and updating annually you are able to track performance year over year, are you on trajectory or off, and how do you need to course correct to get there.

Mid Term: Yearly Goals

Every January first, this comes around. What are your new year’s resolutions? Every year I set personal goals the first of the year. I also do this with our family and with Ryonet and Allmade, along with their relative teams. A year is a good time frame and unit of time to measure big projects that are important, lead towards your vision, but take longer than days to complete. Personally I review these with my accountability group 1x per quarter and around the same amount of time with my family. At work, we review our major goals and initiatives monthly and track performance on what we call a bowling chart, which keeps track of the major KPI’s set for each goal.

One thing that I have started doing is an annual year in review and what’s next. This closes out what we got done in the last year and what we want to do (goals) for the upcoming year. I do this as a blog post and it typically gets sent out to all of our customers in an end of year email, talk about making goals public. I have also started keeping my goals on my phone and having siri play them to me at least 2x per week in order to keep them top of mind. These are yearly goals. I would also do this with your vision too every quarter or so. The point of this is to keep these goals top of mind and your progress to achieving them thus, so you don’t get to the end of a quarter or a year and be like, what happened to the year. I didn’t get done what I wanted to??

Short Term: This Week

I like the time span of a week to keep track of what are the most important tasks/goals you are going to knock out this week, which helps you to your annual goals and towards you vision. I keep track of these goals on a goal board aka a SCRUM board which buckets things in do, doing and done. Do are things I want to get done this week, this year, etc. Doing is what I am going to work on today, and done, is done. I share these with my entire leadership team, influences, and my wife (about 22 people in total). I have my leadership team do the same thing to all of their peers and direct reports. These go out first thing on Monday AM! I balance this each Sunday or Monday AM with my calendar and also call out my week for these team members too.

Now! Today

What are you going to get done and what do you have to do? I find the good old task list to be the most effective at managing this. I personally use my note pad and check boxes to keep track of this or sometimes I send myself an email. The point is, write it down, ensure it fits in the priority of the day, and get it done! If I don’t get it done that day I typically transfer it over to my week board.

Running a system of making your goals helps you turn the goal process into a habit, which then will happen with consistency and regularity without using mental resources to get done. Habit creation is actually the most powerful and overall effective way to grow into the person and leader you want to become.

What is an NPS Score?

You have probably either seen a survey question at the bottom of your order confirmation or in an email after your item has shipped that asks you to give us a rating on how likely you would be to recommend Ryonet to a friend. This survey helps us receive our NPS Score, which in turn helps us improve the customer experience.

So What is an NPS Score?

A NPS Score, or a Net Promoter Score, is a simple tool that businesses use to gauge how well their business is doing in regards to customer satisfaction and experience. A simple survey question gets sent to customers asking them on a scale of one to ten, how likely they would be to recommend a given business to a friend. People who score your business a 9 or 10 are loyal enthusiasts and are called promoters. Those who score you a 7 or 8 are considered unenthusiastic customers and are called passives. Anyone who scores you a 6 or below is an unhappy customer and are called detractors. In order to get a total net promoter score, the percentage of detractors is subtracted from the percentage of promoters.

Along with telling us about the customer experience, a NPS score also helps predict growth because the higher amount of promoters you have and the higher your NPS score is, the more likely your customers will be recommending your business to people they know

How Does Ryonet Use our NPS Score?

Here at Ryonet, we use our NPS score as another way to gauge how well we are doing with customer satisfaction. If our NPS score is low, we make sure to delve into the problem and figure out what parts of our service are causing customers to be unhappy. From there, we work on fixing the problem(s). At Ryonet, we are all about being the best at getting better, and we want to constantly improve the service we give our fantastic customers. Don’t Forget to Dream Big

I’m always excited to speak to groups about things I am passionate. The best speaking advice I have ever heard is from Tony Hseih of Zappos, when speaking, spend more building your passion and less time building your speech, your passion will come through and your speech will too. So when Bruce asked me to talk about leadership, goal setting, and building I decided to pick one that I was the most passionate about and that I hope could add the most value to every life here.

Last year I spoke about leadership, and how the natural form of leadership is to be brave, go first, and go with a conviction and in a direction that inspires others to follow. Leadership is then stepping back and supporting those who decide to follow you all the while moving up and down the line, sometimes playing the cheerleader in the middle, sometimes it is helping the one at the end up the mountain, and sometimes it is going first into battle.

Leadership is humility, courage, and selflessness. This year I am not going to talk about what leadership is, I am going to talk about what great leaders do in their life to support their role, growth, and ultimate success as a leader. Here are three things that I have found in my developing role as a leader and observed and learned from the leaders whom I aspire to be like.

  • Don’t forget to dream big
  • Make goal setting systematic
  • Find and make the right habits

In my experience there is a three part system that leaders employee in their lives and business cultures to create ongoing success. You can achieve some form of success by doing some of them and I know that from experience, but to get to your full potential as human and a leader they all have to present, working in unison, and pushing you forward and this is the experience I am a continual student of. Today, we are going to talk about not forgetting to dream big.

Don’t Forget to Dream Big

Everything starts with a dream and through that seed, amazing things can grow and become. Dreams form in your imitation through thought and imagery, the more real are, the real they become in actuality. When do you dream, where do you dream, how do you dream and how can you dream bigger and better.

When and Where to Dream

Some start life with wild imaginations, dreams of grandeur, stardom, and outer space ambitions.

Some, due to circumstances never knew what dreaming was because they were raised in a physical or mental state of scarcity not having the basic needs necessary in order to advance up Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and envision a better life for them or the world around them.

For those who once dreamt big, how do we relight and enhance that?

For those who never have, how do we start?

Dreaming is a very interpersonal, very quiet, and very exciting thing. Refining the process of dreaming can accentuate the power and effectiveness of it and greatly enhance the rest of your life. As a child, I remember first dreaming as a  second grader about the grandeur of success and recognition on the mythical battlefields of my grade school.

There was the girl, a seventh grader who was so smart. She would walk past my 2nd grade room everyday to go over to the high school and study the tools, mostly comprised of tractors.  I was infatuated with tractors and got several tractor magazines picking out the ones that would do the best job in the setting, in this case my high school playground. In my mind, late at night, and wee into the morning I would come up with these extraordinary scenes where our school is being attached. I organize all the students and their relevant tractors to create a giant fort with huge walls and moats, and then of course how I save the girl from impending doom.

As I got older the tractors changed to sports cars, then to tour buses, and now to private jets. The school yard battle turned into battle of the bands or national tours or the battlefields of business and now the battle for our world’s environment and equality for its people. It’s harder today than it was 30 years ago, but here are the things that I do in order to help me remember to dream big.

Dreaming is best done when your body is busy but mind is active, which allows your body and mind to operate independently, this is also the time when I come up with the best new ideas.

Examples:

  • While running. My morning and evening runs are times when I hit the road and just think. My body is busy pounding the pavement, my mind is able to dream, create, and form the necessary connections between the two.
  • In the water. In the bath, shower, or hot tub while your body is being submerged or showed with warm water, its sense are engulfed, your mind is now free.
  • Household project time. When I clean (the house, the cars, the land scaping) I love to learn via audio book. When the audio book is done playing, I start dreaming, how to apply what I learned, going big like the hero’s I am listening to in the book.
  • Driving. This used to be more effective that it is now as now I use this for more learning time, which then turns into dreaming time.
  • As you nod off. Today it seems like sleep comes too quickly to dream as I am normally exhausted from the day, however, if you are a night owl and don’t fall to sleep earlier, try going to bed a little earlier and playing a movie of your future in your head vs checking your phone, working, or watching TV. You’ll be surprised where you will go and how easily it puts you to sleep.

How

Dreaming has to be visual and the best way to make it visual is to actually make it visual. If your dream is to own a private jet, get magazines or print out pictures of private jets. Whatever your dream is, get visuals of it, pin them, print them, virtually, physically and in areas where you can see them. This is where subscribing to a magazine,newsletter or podcast enhances the effectiveness of this technique because it keeps new content coming in every month or week.

Create a dream board, there are a ton of aps, websites like pinterest, or systems out there that allow you to pin your dreams, connect the dreams, and remind you of your dreams.
